First Permanent White Habitation in Owens Valley

In August of 1861 A. Van Fleet with three other men drove their cattle in and prepared to stay. A cabin of sod and stone was built at the northern end of the valley at the big bend of Owens River.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
