Site of First Protestant Church

On this site was organized by the Reverend Sylvester Woodbridge, Jr., on April 15, 1849, the first Presbyterian Church of Benicia. This was the first Protestant church established in California with an ordained resident pastor. The church was disbanded in 1875.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
