Benicia Capitol

On February 5, 1853, the capital of the State of California was established at Benicia, in the new city hall. On February 24 a deed was executed to the state for the city hall property. The Legislature left Benicia for permanent quarters in Sacramento on February 28, 1854. Until 1858 the building was used as a county courthouse. It has been used for church services, lodge meetings, and as a schoolhouse.
