Ávila Adobe

This house was built in 1818 by Don José María Avila, who lost his life in a revolt against Governor Victoria in 1832. Used as Commodore Stockton's headquarters in 1847, it was repaired by popular subscription in 1930, and the vicinity was also restored to the original aspect.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
