Larkin House

The Larkin House was built in 1835 of adobe and wood by Thomas Oliver Larkin, a Yankee merchant who came to California in April 1832. Larkin was the only U.S. consul to California under Mexican rule. Therefore, his home was the American consulate from 1844 to 1846. His home was also used as military headquarters for Kearny, Mason, and Sherman.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
