Cadw's description

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of a cropmark enclosure of probable Roman date. The site was identified through aerial photography in the 1960s. It is a square ditched enclosure measuring 53m by 61m, with a broad inner and narrow outer ditch defining most of two sides. The ditches may surround a building, possibly a villa. No features are visible on the ground and the site has not been excavated.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of Roman defensive organisation and settlement. The site forms an important element within the wider Roman context and within the surrounding landscape. The site is well preserved and retains considerable archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, building techniques and functional detail.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
