Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of a well-preserved medieval deserted rural settlement. The settlement comprises a group of three platform houses (I-III), levelled areas of ground on which houses are built, aligned SW-NE along the contour and an adjacent group of three rectangular house platforms (IV-VI), all cut deeply into the hill slope.
The site stands on a sheltered, north-facing shelf with spectacular views across the Menai Straits and eastern Anglesey and forms an important element in a wider medieval upland landscape.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of settlement organisation. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits, including preserved medieval ground surfaces below the monuments and intact palaeo-environmental remains. The structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques. A platform house may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can be further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
