Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.

The monument consists of an oval enclosure 39m x 29m containing at least three round houses and one rectangular structure, probably dating to the late prehistoric or Romano-British period.

The enclosing wall, of earth and small stones faced on both sides with large stones, is most clearly defined on the N side where it is visible as a bank 1.7m wide and up to 0.6m high. There is an entrance on the SW side and traces of an old road can be seen approaching this point from the W.

Inside the enclosure there are the remains of two round houses c.9m in diameter, the walls visible as low, grass-covered, stone and earth banks. To the S of the entrance a depression in the rushes would seem to indicate a circular structure built into the main enclosure wall, whilst to the N of the entrance a rectangular structure is clearly visible, again built into the main enclosure wall. A small piece of walling is just visible to the E of the rectangular building.

The site is part of a larger system of other hut groups and fields. It is situated in wet, marshy ground and is covered with rushes.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric settlement. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structures themselves may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques. The monument has considerable group value with other contemporary sites in the area.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
