Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
A group of 7 round cairns on fairly level ground NW of Foel Dduarth, forming a cemetery probably dating to the Bronze Age.
The largest, known as Carnedd-y-Saeson, is 13.7m in diameter. There is a central cist with displaced capstone; two concentric circles of stone slabs, one with stones set on edge, are visible. The remaining 6 cairns are composed of smaller stones and lie NE of the above. All but one seem to have stone kerbs. Diameters range from 4.5m to 9.1m.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric funerary practises. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
