Houten loods (Wijk bij Duurstede).

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

NEW HOLLAND WATERLINE

Introduction

WOODEN SHED (Wijk bij Duurstede) on the west side of the Kromme Rijn, in the Walplantsoen near the inlet sluice / inundation culvert in the Rijndijk. A shed already existed at this location around 1870. The shed lies with its greatest length parallel to the water and with the ridge of the roof approximately north-south. At various locations outside and inside fort grounds, over the course of decades wooden, stone and metal ('tin') sheds have been erected to serve as (provisional or permanent) storage space, storage, accommodation for people or material, hospital, fire station, horse stable, watch house, etc. This shed can be counted among this category of storage facilities. A large part of these sheds has since decayed, been demolished, relocated or sometimes also replaced, but others still exist in authentic form in situ. Sometimes these are remarkably simple structures of small size, but there are also more complex and larger examples. The wooden shed at the inlet sluice / inundation culvert at Wijk bij Duurstede is in reasonable condition. The type is rare within the New Holland Waterline; the original purpose of the shed has not been ascertained, but will have been related to the inlet sluice / inundation culvert; the shed currently serves a function for the regional water board. The interior has not been visited; whether there were previously other facade openings than the current entrance could not be determined. The wooden facades have clearly been recently renewed, as has the roof covering.

Description

WOODEN SHED (Wijk bij Duurstede) on the west side of the Kromme Rijn, in the Walplantsoen near the inlet sluice / inundation culvert in the Rijndijk, built on a brick plinth, covered by a hipped roof clad with concrete tiles and further erected in wood. There is a small overhang all around. The shed comprises one storey and is built on a rectangular ground plan of approximately 9 x 4.50 m. The four facades are provided with black painted or tarred, caulked boarding, which has clearly been recently renewed. There is only one facade opening, situated centrally in the gable south-eastern facade and which is provided with attached, double, wooden doors, which are boarded vertically.

Valuation

The WOODEN SHED (Wijk bij Duurstede) is of general interest because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 realised by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others over approximately 125 years was strengthened and improved.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of wooden building related to military-strategic architecture, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century).

This concerns a component that essentially dates from the 19th century, presumably a wooden storage for material belonging to the inlet sluice / inundation culvert.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and in particular with the adjoining inlet sluice / inundation culvert and the lock-beam barrier located slightly further away and the associated shed.

* The component is representative because it is an example of a shed presumably built around 1870 at a water barrier created at that same time.

* The component is - despite restoration - reasonably well preserved because main form and function have remained clearly recognisable.
