Houten schotbalkenloods (Wijk bij Duurstede).

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

NEW HOLLAND WATER LINE

Introduction

TIMBER-FRAME SHED (Wijk bij Duurstede) on the west side of the Kromme Rijn, somewhat to the southwest of the timber-frame lock in the Singel. A shed already existed at this location around 1870. The shed lies with its greatest length parallel to the road and with its roof ridge east-west. The shed is presumably not the first on this site; this specimen is - judging by its execution - probably built in the Interwar period, but possibly around the turn of the century. The structure is intended for storage of beams and materials in order to be able to close the adjacent timber-frame lock. A drawing dating from 1932 shows a similar timber-frame shed to be built on the east side of the timber-frame lock (6.50 x 3.50 metres). It may be the same specimen. Over the decades, on various locations outside and within fort terrains, wooden, stone and metal ('sheet metal') sheds have been built to serve as (provisional or permanent) storage space, storage, shelter for people or materiel, hospital, fire station, horse stable, guard house, and so forth; to this category of storage places the timber-frame shed can also be counted. Much of these sheds has meanwhile perished, been demolished, relocated or sometimes replaced, but others still exist in authentic form in situ. Sometimes these are particularly simple structures of small dimensions, but there are also more complex and larger specimens. The shed at the timber-frame lock in the Kromme Rijn at Wijk bij Duurstede is in fairly good condition. The type is uncommon within the New Holland Water Line. The interior has not been visited.

Description

TIMBER-FRAME SHED (Wijk bij Duurstede) on the southwest side of the timber-frame lock in the Kromme Rijn at the Singel. The predominantly black shed has a brick, but relatively recently cemented plinth. Between in total seven posts placed at equal distances apart, both long sides are provided with horizontally placed wooden boards with intervening ventilation slits. Both gable ends are horizontally boarded with rabbet joints. The eastern gable, facing the lock, is provided with double, clamped doors, which are vertically boarded. The shed has no other facade openings, has one storey and is built on a rectangular ground plan of approximately 6 x 4 metres. The gabled roof covered with dampened pantiles ends at both sides with short overhang and wooden wind vanes.

Valuation

The TIMBER-FRAME SHED (Wijk bij Duurstede) is of general interest because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus, and subsequently by others over approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of timber structures related to military-strategic building design, which are based on the system of inundation and access defence (twentieth century).

This is a component from the Interwar period or from the beginning of the twentieth century, namely a timber storage shed for timber-frame locks.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Water Line. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and in particular with the adjacent timber-frame lock and the slightly further located inlet lock / inundation culvert.

* The component is representative because it is an example of a timber-frame shed built in the first half of the twentieth century - possibly shortly after 1932 - at a waterwork dating from around 1870.

* The component is fairly well preserved because main form and function have remained easily recognizable.
