Omschrijving
Grondduiker (Inundatiedijk-Zuid).
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Ground culvert (Inundation Dike-South).
NEW HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Introduction
GROUND CULVERT (Inundation Dike-South) as an ancillary hydraulic engineering component of the Inundation Canal at Tiel. The culvert is located approximately 100 metres west of the Scheluwe bridge in the Floraweg. The ground culvert was at the time of construction a water management connection between land to the north and south of the Inundation Canal. The culvert was built around 1880 following the severing of land by the canal and thus served a civil function that resulted from the construction of a military work. On the north side the culvert opened out into a small waterway, but later a small building - presumably a small pumping station - was erected here. The distance between the works to the south and north of the Inundation Canal is approximately 50 m.
Description
GROUND CULVERT (Inundation Dike-South), consisting of a masonry front wall in the southern slope of the Inundation Dike, with a non-visible culvert opening and flanking buttress walls sloping diagonally at right angles to the front on either side. Total width approximately 3 m. In the masonry some natural stone sections and in the wings simple sill-post recesses.
Valuation
The GROUND CULVERT (Inundation Dike-South), a component of a waterway passing under the canal, is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as a component of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of construction related to military-strategic engineering, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence.
This concerns an expression of historical hydraulic engineering related to military-strategic construction, namely a ground culvert for water management connection of land located on either side of the canal.
* Ensemble value and situational values as a component of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also because of the functional and physical cohesion with the other components of the complex.
* The component is reasonably well preserved because the main form, the constructional detailing of the ground culvert on one side of the canal has remained clearly recognisable.
* The component is representative (characteristic) because it clearly shows the former civil function in relation to an inundation canal of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie.
