Duiker (Lingedijk).

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Culvert (Lingedijk).

NEW HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Introduction

CULVERT (Lingedijk) as an ancillary hydraulic engineering component of the Inundation Canal at Tiel. The culvert is located approximately 20 metres southwest of the Doorlaatsluis / Damsluis / Bridge (Lingedijk / Lingeweg). The culvert thus lies between the sluice and the mouth of the canal in the Linge. A second specimen - somewhat further to the west - was later substantially modified and also provided with a small pumping station. The culvert was at the time of construction a connection between watercourses to the south of the Inundation Canal and the canal, possibly serving drainage purposes. The culvert was built following the severing of land by the canal around 1880 and thus served a civil function that resulted from the construction of a military work. The visible side of the work is located on the canal side (north side); the outlet has been bricked up. On the south side the culvert opened out into a small waterway, but nothing of this is now (still) to be seen. The work was presumably structurally restored around 2012, but as a water work it no longer serves a function.

Description

CULVERT (Lingedijk), consisting of a masonry front wall in the northern slope of the Lingedijk / Inundation Dike, with traces of a former, circular culvert opening visible in the masonry front. The total width of the work is approximately 3 m. Some natural stone sections have been placed as covering. Centrally on top there is an iron winch mechanism by which a sluice gate could be operated.

Valuation

The CULVERT (Lingedijk), constructed as an additional work at the Inundation Canal, is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as a component of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of construction related to military-strategic engineering, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence.

This concerns an expression of historical hydraulic engineering related to military-strategic construction, namely a culvert serving a local water management purpose.

* Ensemble value and situational values as a component of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also because of the functional and physical cohesion with the other components of the complex.

* The component is reasonably well preserved because the main form and the constructional detailing of the culvert, as well as that of a functional component of it, have remained clearly recognisable.

* The component is representative (characteristic) because it clearly shows the former civil function in relation to an inundation canal of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie.
