Introduction

The CONSTRUCTION OF INUNDATION CANAL AND ACCOMPANYING DYKES at Tiel have since approximately 1880 been an essential part of an additional water intake for possible inundations in the river region, whereby use would be made of the long-existing Linge. The approximately 3000 metre long Inundation Canal from the Waal below Tiel to the mouth in the Linge beyond the sluice gate / dam sluice in the Lingedijk was dug shortly after 1880 in order to be able to flood the area to the east of the Diefdijk line. The accompanying dykes were constructed on the basis of the excavated soil material, but were also necessary to maintain a sufficient water level in the canal. The land around the canal lay in some places lower than or level with the canal water level.
