Omschrijving
Doorlaatsluis / Damsluis / Schotbalkenkering / Brug (Lingedijk / Lingeweg).
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Sluice gate / Dam sluice / Shutter gate barrier / Bridge (Lingedijk / Lingeweg).
NEW HOLLANDSE WATERLINE
Introduction
SLUICE GATE / DAM SLUICE / SHUTTER GATE BARRIER / BRIDGE (Lingedijk / Lingeweg) with three openings and consisting of a pair of abutments and two intermediate piers. Over the sluice / barrier lies a concrete slab bridge; the whole of sluice and bridge is comparable to the Sluice gate / Dam sluice / Shutter gate barrier (Kruisstraat), although the bridge railings on this specimen are presumably of later date. The defence system of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) land areas. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of water works, such as sluices, weirs and canals, by which the necessary water level could be set and maintained rapidly and within narrow limits. Many different types of sluices were employed, depending on the place where they functioned in the system. Sometimes already existing navigation, drainage or check sluices were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones were (substantially) adapted. The Sluice gate / Dam sluice / Bridge (Lingedijk / Lingeweg) at Tiel belongs to the newly built works specially constructed for this purpose. It concerns a pass-through built in the Inundation canal, which could be closed in emergencies by lowering shutter gates. The sluice with bridge was built for combined military and civil purposes as part of the Lingedijk. Of the three openings, both outer ones were partially filled in after the war with concrete filling, while the middle one was provided with two metal winches with retractable sluice gate. Shutter gate slots partially filled in. In or around 2012, important restoration work took place on the structure.
Description
SLUICE GATE / DAM SLUICE / SHUTTER GATE BARRIER / BRIDGE (Lingedijk / Lingeweg) consisting of two masonry abutments with wing walls sloping and projecting on either side. Between the two main piers two intermediate piers which divide the opening into three equal parts. The total span of the work is approximately 20 m, of which approximately 3 x 5 m for the openings. The intermediate piers are pointed on both sides in a grenade shape and provided with a natural stone reinforcement. On the east (Waal side) of the bridge, two shutter gate slots are each recessed in the (intermediate) piers. Over the sluice a non-authentic, but almost certainly pre-war BRIDGE, executed as a concrete slab bridge. Below this are iron beams present from the authentic bridge. The length of the bridge is approximately 20 m, the width approximately 5.5 m.
Valuation
The SLUICE GATE / DAM SLUICE / SHUTTER GATE BARRIER / BRIDGE (Lingedijk / Lingeweg) is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th and 20th century).
This concerns an expression of historical water engineering related to military-strategic and civil building, the component parts of which serve as closable water pass-through and respectively bank connection.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie and because of the functional and physical coherence with the remaining parts of the complex and in particular with the comparable Sluice gate / Dam sluice / Shutter gate barrier / Bridge (Kruisstraat).
The work is well preserved because the main form and important parts of the detailing are still authentic or recognisable in restored form.
The work is representative because it in largely unaltered state can demonstrate the functioning of the water inlet system from the river.
