NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 46. Concrete bridge.

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

The CONCRETE BRIDGE in the Houtensepad at Lunet III is a relatively rare example of a bridge specifically built due to the large-scale modification of traffic infrastructure east of Utrecht in the existing country road from the city towards Houten. The road / Houtensepad ran traditionally between Lunettes III and IV and had a northward branch towards Lunet III and a southern branch along Lunet IV and then further towards the Polders Hoog- and Laag-Raven. With the construction of the Waterlinieweg in the last pre-war years, this underwent a modification, whereby the connections with the city shifted northward (along the railway) and southward (at the level of present-day Brennerbaan), while at Lunet III a bridge across part of the fort ditch was constructed. The new, curved course of the Houtensepad with bridge came to lie on the west side of the Lunet within the Military Crown Land. For this purpose, two sheds (e and f3) were demolished and an earthen defensive work was also levelled. The bridge served both a civil and a military traffic function - the latter in particular in connection with the complicated situation around the inundation canal, the Waterlinieweg and the nearby railways towards Arnhem and Den Bosch, located slightly north of Lunet III. With the later widening of the Waterlinieweg, the slope of this road came to lie close against the road and the bridge, but the construction and structural parts of the bridge are largely still intact.

Description

CONCRETE BRIDGE in the Houtensepad at Lunet III west of the work and located within the Military Crown Land as indicated on the map. The slightly curved concrete bridge rests on dozens of square concrete piles, driven at an angle to each other, which are connected at multiple points across the length of the bridge by concrete beams. The total length is approximately 70 m - of which approximately 30 m straight and on north and south sides approximately 20 m long, slightly curved approach spans. The approach spans are separated from the middle, straight bridge section by joints visible in the road surface. On the east side of the bridge there is a raised pavement that is accompanied along its entire length by an iron railing; on the west side the bridge now borders closely on the Waterlinieweg.

Valuation

The CONCRETE BRIDGE in the Houtensepad at Lunet III is of general importance because of:

* Cultural historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.

* Architectural historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic architecture, which was based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the arms race with increasingly powerful offensive means (19th and 20th century), c. the system of 'living' field fortification in depth (20th century).

This is a component from the period 1935-1940, namely an expression related to military-strategic architecture of historical road and water engineering, serving as a military and civil span of part of a fort ditch and as a bank connection.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and with a number of works dating from the same period that were constructed due to major traffic infrastructure developments around Utrecht.

* The component is representative (characteristic) because, in conjunction with nearby works, it is a good example of the application of this type of concrete bridge in a combined civil and military situation.

* The component is fairly well preserved because it has remained clearly recognizable in form and situation and the technical execution has largely remained unchanged.
