Omschrijving
Cluster 46. Fortwachterswoning.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 46. Fort-keeper's dwelling.
NEW HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Introduction
FORT-KEEPER'S DWELLING as on the throat side of Lunet III, with the ridge perpendicular to the throat, built as a non-defensive component. Because most forts and other defensive works (located outside the built-up area) - when there was no question of mobilization or exercises - had no garrison of military personnel, in many cases there was a separate dwelling or other type of accommodation for a manager or watchman. Sometimes such a dwelling or accommodation also had another function, such as that of a lock-keeper's dwelling or bridge-keeper's house. In the applied architecture, there is consequently no uniformity; the building material used varies, but usually consists of brick or wood, while the number of storeys also differs. Also regarding the location of a watchman's dwelling there are no clear standards; some fort-keeper's dwellings lie within the fort ditch, others outside it - sometimes even at some distance from the fort, but usually on the throat side of it. The fort-keeper's dwelling on Lunet III is a brick structure under a gabled roof. The dwelling, according to the bricks used, was raised in the past, whereby a half storey - a storey with breastworks - came into being. The structure - a successor to a wooden, earlier example (possibly located elsewhere) - dates from the period 1840-1848. The later building phase could be from around 1900, but in the context of restoration also from later. Windows in the gable ends at (half) storey level all relatively modern. In the southern roof plane a dormer and in the northern one a small roof window. At the rear a flat-roofed extension, with two small windows and an extended flue stack above it.
Description
FORT-KEEPER'S DWELLING on rectangular floor plan and under a gabled roof laid with half-round pantiles. The dwelling, according to the bricks used, was raised in the past, whereby a half storey - a storey with breastworks - came into being. The structure dates from the years 1840-1848. The dwelling is one of the oldest examples with this function found in the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. The later executed raising presumably dates from around 1900. The building has generous roof overhang, wind braces and gutters on brackets. There are two brick chimneys, one in the rear of the ridge and one in the northern roof plane; there are wall anchors. The west-facing (main) gable is provided on the ground floor with two rectangular windows under dog-tooth moulding, which are filled with heavy frames, wooden shutters and (modified) sash windows. In the northern long side lies access on the left and to the right of this a similarly comparable window; in the southern long side there are at least two similar facade openings.
Valuation
The FORT-KEEPER'S DWELLING of Lunet III is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus, realized and subsequently by others for approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of building related to military-strategic engineering, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century).
This concerns a military service dwelling located on the work, which in its initial form dates from the period 1840-1848, but which in a later phase was raised with a half storey.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and because of the characteristic location on the throat side of the fort.
* The component is representative because it is an example of a fort-keeper's dwelling installed on a defensive work; the dwelling represents rarity value because it is a fairly early example of such a service dwelling on a military work.
* The component is fairly well preserved because main form and building details, as well as various components, have remained intact or are still recognizable.
