Cluster 37. Schuilplaats type 1915.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 37. Shelter type 1915.

NEW HOLLAND WATERLINE

Introduction

Concrete SHELTER TYPE 1915, located near the northern end of the earthwork construction of the Works at Griftensteijn and created in response to changed military techniques and as part of the forward defence of Fort De Bilt (Fort on the Biltse Straatweg). Concrete (group) shelters were a response to the arrival of heavy projectiles and explosive grenades. In the last decades of the 19th century, forts became easy and vulnerable targets with heavy risks due to the concentrated functions within them. Fort De Bilt was also considered outdated and in 1914 it was provided with forward works at Griftenstein, which also meant a dispersal of functions. From the beginning of the 20th century, experiments were conducted with dispersed, small concrete (group) shelters. Sometimes ad hoc use was made of existing, readily available materials such as railway rails, rubble, wooden beams and concrete slabs, but alongside this prefabricated components were assembled or concrete was poured on site. Thus, in various places within the New Holland Waterline, diverse - whether unique or not - traces of such experiments in concrete can still be found. Sometimes they were called (group) shelters, but also battery shelters. The Shelters Type 1915 belong to the experiments that had been developed so far that building to a standardised design was possible. This was partly possible because they were executed in fairly thin concrete - presumably a consequence of the rapid developments in technology and fortification; as a result, they were no more than 'splinter-proof'. Shelters of Type 1915 were applied in various places; approximately 25 still remain, including some on and around the Fort at Rijnauwen and Fort Vechten and this single surviving example of a larger number as part of the Works at Griftensteijn. The concrete cover of the Shelter Type 1915 of the complex Works at Griftensteijn, located directly beside the northernmost Group Shelter Type P of the complex, has since the restoration of the complex, around 2015, formed part of the path to the staircase with a viewpoint over this group shelter. As a result, the Shelter Type 1915 - and especially through the application of a thick layer of earth on the gorge side - became difficult to recognise.

Description

The splinter-proof SHELTER TYPE 1915, part of the Works at Griftensteijn, is a single-storey accommodation built in fairly thin, reinforced concrete, suitable for occupancy by 16 men. The shelter served as accommodation (waiting cover) for a group of men and was integrated into the earthworks and/or trench line here constructed in 1914. The dimensions of the work built on a rectangular plan and flat-roofed measure approximately 11 x 1.40 x 1.80 metres. The shelter was provided with an earth cover on top and on the front side; part of this (on the front side) is still present. Two rectangular entrances, left and right in the gorge side and five horizontal slit windows (which are barely visible anymore) positioned between them could be closed by means of (no longer present) steel shutters.

Valuation

The SHELTER TYPE 1915 of the Works at Griftensteijn is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Waterline, as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 realised by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others for approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic architecture, which is based: a. on the system of inundation and access defence (19th and 20th centuries), b. on the race with strengthening offensive means (19th and 20th centuries), c. on the system of 'living' field fortification in depth (20th century).

This concerns an example of a splinter-proof troop shelter of Type 1915, which also counts as a developed military concrete experiment.

* Ensemble value and situational values, as part of the New Holland Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is relatively rare as an early example of military concrete experiments and it is representative (characteristic) because it is recognisable as part of a dispersed defence line added to the existing fortification system.

* The component is reasonably well preserved, but as a built element it is difficult to recognise in the field.
