Cluster 37. Betonblokken van gietstalen koepelkazematten type G.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 37. Concrete blocks of cast-steel dome casemates type G.

NEW HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Introduction

Three CONCRETE BLOCKS OF CAST-STEEL DOME CASEMATES TYPE G within the complex Works at Griftensteijn, as remains of a linear and access defence, added to existing works behind an earthen wall and obstructions and in combination with other concrete works. In 1936, as a supplement to the reinforced concrete casemate, the so-called cast-steel dome casemate was introduced in the Netherlands, which was based on a system already applied in France in 1917. The armoured domes used were small in size (favourable for visibility and hit probability), round in shape (favourable for deflecting hits and strength), relatively simple to produce in series, and they had an 'external' firing port (favourable for gases and sound). Moreover, they could be manufactured in the Netherlands, which significantly reduced dependence on foreign countries. A first order of 100 pieces in the Netherlands (from DEMKA) was followed by a second order of 50 pieces from the Belgian Soc. Anonyme John Cockerill. In total, more than 700 must have been cast in a short time, but only a few of them have survived. The cast-steel domes, with a diameter of 1.75 m and thicknesses of 10-17 centimetres, were installed in multiple casemate types with resistance classes W 12-15 to W 21-28.

Shortly before the start of the Second World War, so-called Cast-Steel Dome Casemates Type G were constructed in various places in the Dutch lines, particularly in the IJssellinie, the Maaslinie, the Grebbelinie (each approximately 150) and the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie (approximately 80 in a reinforced version with a wall thickness of 14 cm). The usual construction of reinforced concrete with one or more fixed firing ports was abandoned here in favour of a system that had a projectile direction (up to 270 degrees) within variable limits, within a cast-steel cylinder with a domed roof. Most domes were placed in the Dome Casemates Type G. Cast-Steel Dome Casemates Type G were built to a standardised design and consist of a cast-steel dome (usually removed), which is anchored in a reinforced concrete structure. On the front side there was a firing port with a protruding element - a 'brow' for protection of the weapon - and on the other side an entrance sealed by a steel hatch. The concrete structure consists of a relatively low rectangular building, with a bevelled section on the front side, to achieve maximum field of fire. The standard armament for dome casemates in the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie consisted of a heavy machine gun. The firing port and the access to the casemate could be sealed 'gas-tight' from inside.

During the Second World War, the vast majority of domes inland were demolished by the occupier from the casemates - usually by blowing them up - to be recast for other steel needs. On the coast, they were partly incorporated into the defence, but were mostly demolished again after the war. As a result, complete dome casemates are rare, but they still occur, among others at the Fort at Vechten. The concrete structures in which they were placed are more common - but usually in damaged form. Of the three preserved specimens within the complex Works at Griftensteijn, one is located directly on the Utrechtseweg (north side) and the second approximately 75 metres and a third 350 m to the south of the road at the end of the line. The front side of the first two are oriented such that frontal fire could be directed at the road; the other was intended for flanking fire. All three specimens are in the immediate vicinity of Group Shelters Type P. The specimen on the Utrechtseweg was largely exposed during the restoration of the complex and fitted on top with a 'work of art' referring to the former gun.

Description

The three CONCRETE BLOCKS OF CAST-STEEL DOME CASEMATES TYPE G (1939-1940) within the complex Works at Griftensteijn are the remains of relatively low, virtually square, concrete casemates (approximately 7.00 x 6.20 x 2.50 m; w x d x h), with a rearward sloping surface at the height of the space hollowed out for the dome. On the rear side they have a recess in the concrete to allow access to the dome. All three specimens have been stripped of their cast-steel dome, which was removed and recast. The specimen on the Utrechtseweg has been largely exposed and is clearly recognisable.

Valuation

The three CONCRETE BLOCKS OF CAST-STEEL DOME CASEMATES TYPE G within the complex Works at Griftensteijn are of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 realised by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently reinforced and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic architecture, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (20th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthened offensive means (20th century), c. the system of 'living' field fortification in depth (20th century).

These are components from the period 1939-1940, namely reinforced concrete remains of standard cast-steel dome casemates.

* Ensemble value and situational values as components of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie in general and because of the mutual functional, functional-spatial and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The components are representative (characteristic) because they are recognisable as components of a deconcentrated defence line and as defence of an important access added to the existing defence system and because as such they have remained recognisably preserved in the field.

* The components are reasonably well preserved because important physical characteristics, despite wilful partial dismantling, have remained recognisable.
