Introduction

FORT WARDEN'S DWELLING situated outside the fort ditch of Fort Voordorp, opposite the access bridge to the work, military service dwelling. Because most forts and other defensive works (located outside built-up areas) had no garrison of military personnel when there was no mobilisation or exercises, in many cases a separate dwelling or other shelter was provided for a manager or watchman. Sometimes such a dwelling or shelter also served another function, such as that of a bridge- or lock-keeper's dwelling. In a number of cases the dwelling could be equipped for defence. Description

FORT WARDEN'S DWELLING of Fort Voordorp, erected on a rectangular ground plan and consisting of one storey under a gabled roof covered with red tiles. The front or northeastern longitudinal facade is symmetrical in layout, with a door with fanlight in the centre and a sash window on either side of it. At the height of the floor beam of the upper floor ornamental wall anchors in rose form are set in the facade. The right-hand side facade (end gable) contains two sash windows on the first storey and two casement windows on the upper floor.
