Introduction

BOMBPROOF BUILDING D / CONSUMPTION MAGAZINE of Fort Voordorp, as (south)east of Barracks A partly located in the southern curtain wall, earth-covered, bombproof structure. A consumption magazine is a storage for ammunition. With the increase in the range of artillery, the force of projectile impacts and the explosive power of (brisance) grenades, it became increasingly difficult to resist bombardments. Strengthening of masonry, application of shock-absorbing masonry systems (among other things by means of arches), shallow slope angles and curved or pointed forms, use of concrete - and later reinforced concrete - in increasingly heavy execution, was one of the ways to make the fortifications resistant to increasing attack power. Moreover, the application of earth coverings proved to be a good means of absorbing or dampening energy. This is why many masonry or concrete works were provided with an earth layer or a frontal protection of sand or earth. Description

The BOMBPROOF BUILDING D / CONSUMPTION MAGAZINE of Fort Voordorp is located east of Building A and is earthed on three sides. The brick front facade (southwest) is asymmetrical in layout (shoulder angle) with on the left a sloping wing wall and on the right an angled, protruding sloping wing wall. The facade contains a round arch-shaped entrance, which is surrounded by a round arch-shaped stretcher course. The wing walls are provided with interlaced brickwork and have sandstone elements.

Valuation

BOMBPROOF BUILDING D / CONSUMPTION MAGAZINE of Fort Voordorp is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Dutch Waterline as it was designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others over approximately 125 years was strengthened and improved.
