NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

The WOODEN STORAGE SHED (a) of Fort Voordorp, situated to the northeast of and parallel to Barracks A, is a non-bomb-proof storage facility for materiel. In various locations within and outside fort grounds, over the course of decades, wooden, stone and metal ('tin') sheds have been constructed to serve as (provisional or permanent) storage space, storage, shelter for military personnel or materiel, hospital, fire station, horse stable, guardhouse, etc. A large proportion of these sheds has meanwhile deteriorated, been demolished or relocated, but others still exist in situ. The shed measures approximately 39 x 8 metres, comprises approximately 15 bays and ranks among the larger examples within the New Hollandic Waterline. The roof was previously provided with several light openings; following the change of use of the fort and this building, these have disappeared.

The WOODEN STORAGE SHED (a) of Fort Voordorp is of general interest because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently reinforced and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of wooden buildings related to military-strategic building technique, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthened offensive means (19th century).
