Cluster 35. Dubbele remise C.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 35. Double Remise C.

NEW DUTCH WATERLINE

Introduction

DOUBLE REMISE C of Fort Voordorp, as an example of a structure covered with earth on three sides and on top, of which only the facade on the gorge side is visible. With the increase in the range of artillery, the force of projectile impacts and the explosive power of (brisance) grenades, it became increasingly difficult to resist bombardments. Strengthening of masonry, application of shock-absorbing masonry systems (among other things by means of arches), shallow slope angles and curved or pointed forms, use of concrete - and later reinforced concrete - in increasingly heavy execution, was one of the ways to make the fortifications resistant to increasing attack power. Moreover, the application of earth coverings proved to be a good means of absorbing or dampening energy. This is why many masonry or concrete works were provided with an earth layer or a frontal protection of sand or earth. Depending on the period of construction - and thereby on the expected impact force of projectiles - one spoke of 'bombproof buildings' when they were deemed capable of withstanding a predetermined number of impacts from heavy calibre. At Fort Voordorp, a relatively large, bombproof, double remise C was constructed on the northern bastion. The building dates from the period 1879-1880, when the fort underwent adaptation.

Description The DOUBLE REMISE C located on the northern bastion of Fort Voordorp is earthed on three sides and on top. The front facade (southwest) has slightly angled back, sloping wing walls. The top of the facade is finished with voussoirs and interlaced brickwork and is provided with sandstone elements on the corners. Round windows and round the three entrances round arch-shaped voussoirs. Segmental arch-shaped entrances with wooden sliding doors. On the right a sentry box. The interior consists of three vaulted spaces.

Valuation

The DOUBLE REMISE C of Fort Voordorp is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Dutch Waterline as it was designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others over approximately 125 years was strengthened and improved.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthening offensive means (19th century).

This concerns a component from circa 1878, as an example of an earth-covered, brick, bombproof structure, built due to the adaptation of a fort.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Dutch Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative (characteristic) because it in its appearance exhibits the characteristics that emphasise the defensive purpose of the time.

* The component is fairly well preserved because the structure is in virtually the same condition as it was around 1880 and it still possesses authentic and/or originally executed components and details.
