Introduction

POSTERN, REMISE B AND BOMBPROOF STRUCTURE / CASEMATE of Fort Voordorp as entrance to and component of the casemate. A postern is a covered or sheltered passage or sortie route, often constructed under or through a rampart or other earthwork. The postern B of Fort Voordorp was created during the modification of the work in 1878-1879, when the trapezium form was replaced by a predominantly triangular form and on the front side a casemate as (flank) protection for the new ramparts was constructed. The bombproof structure is a building type incorporated in the earthwork of the casemate, with uncovered façade sections on the gorge side (southwest). The remise is a structure on the level of the postern, earth-covered on three sides and on top, a bombproof building. POSTERN, REMISE B AND BOMBPROOF STRUCTURE / CASEMATE form a structural unit of a long bombproof passage, a bombproof storage facility and a bombproof structure situated on a work. The approximately 35-metre-long POSTERN leads from the fort, under the eastern rampart, to a BOMBPROOF STRUCTURE / CASEMATE placed at right angles to it, which also contains a passage as well as two exits. The passage situated in the rampart has semicircular openings on the fort side in a retaining wall. On the west side above the entrance to the postern a REMISE with sloping wing walls, guard niches and a door. The façades and structures are largely earth-covered.

Valuation

POSTERN, REMISE B AND BOMBPROOF STRUCTURE / CASEMATE are of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 realised by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others over approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.
