Omschrijving
Cluster 28. Toegangsbrug.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 28. Access bridge.
NEW HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Introduction
ACCESS BRIDGE over the fort moat, located on the east side of the fort. The bridge dates originally from 1882, but has been substantially restored / reconstructed. The raising or removal / destruction of bridges has been a proven means of warding off intruders since ancient times. Not only did this impede or delay passage or crossing over a waterway, a dry or wet moat or a terrain depression, but an attacker also had to provide means to take the barrier himself if necessary. Wooden bridges were relatively quick to destroy, if necessary by setting them on fire. Stone and concrete bridges required a larger and more time-consuming intervention, although a demolition charge could sometimes quickly achieve the desired effect. With the advent of iron bridges - widely applied in many variants in the course of the 19th century - the second possibility remained, but the first disappeared. Blowing up bridges was capital destruction and happened only in utmost necessity. One way in which iron bridges could be closed off was by removing or making inaccessible (small) parts of them. The current access bridge is presumably a (partial) replica of the original specimen. In the middle of the bridge is a modern access gate fitted with bars and consisting of two revolving doors.
Description
ACCESS BRIDGE over the fort moat, originally from 1882, and located between the 'outer fort' at the fort keeper's residence and the actual fort grounds. The bridge rests on composite, slender iron piers. The bridge (ca. 15 x 3.50 m) has a wooden bridge deck in three parts, of which the middle section is removable. This bridge section is - in contrast to the remaining parts, which are fitted with metal bridge railings - bounded by a chain between posts.
Valuation
The ACCESS BRIDGE of the Fort aan de Klop is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus, and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building practice, which was based on and arose as a consequence of
- the system of inundation and access defence (19th century) and
- the race with increasingly powerful offensive means (19th century).
This is a component originally dating from 1882, namely an expression of historical road and water engineering related to military-strategic building practice.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, and because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* The component is representative (characteristic) because it is a good example of the application of this type of bridge in a military situation.
