Cluster 28. Fortwachterswoning.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 28. Fort commander's dwelling.

NEW HOLLANDIC WATER LINE

Introduction

FORT COMMANDER'S DWELLING to the south of the entrance to the Fort aan de Klop, and to the west of this outside the moat. Because most forts and other (located outside built-up areas) defensive structures - when there was no question of mobilisation or exercises - had to do without a garrison of military personnel, in many cases there was a separate dwelling or other type of accommodation for a manager or warden. Sometimes such a dwelling or accommodation also had another function, such as that of a bridge or sluice keeper's dwelling. As regards the location of a warden's dwelling, there were no uniform standards; the building materials used varied, but almost invariably brick or wood was applied. The current fort commander's dwelling of the Fort aan de Klop is a successor from 1882 of an earlier example that had been located within the fort moat. On the south side of the dwelling, a spacious extension under a flat roof has been realised, in place of an earlier small porch; in the northern roof plane a small hinged light has been placed.

Description

To the south of the entrance, outside the fort, a simple FORT COMMANDER'S DWELLING from 1882. On rectangular plan, a building constructed in brick, one storey high and provided with a gabled roof covered with dampened tiles with overhang, wind braces, tie beams. In the southern roof plane two masonry chimneys. Presumably modified entrance centrally in the northern long elevation; on either side of this a shallow arched window with duumviri shutters. In western gable end similar windows and smaller window in gable top; the latter the same in the eastern gable end.

Valuation

The FORT COMMANDER'S DWELLING of the Fort aan de Klop is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus was realised and subsequently by others for approximately 125 years was strengthened and improved.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of building work related to military-strategic architecture, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthening offensive means (19th century).

This is a component from the period 1871-1886, namely a single-storey, brick military service dwelling from 1882.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative because it is an example of a military service dwelling installed on a defensive structure.

* The component is reasonably well preserved because as a built element of the fort it still allows its function to be well recognised and also aspects of the detailing remained recognisable.
