The register's description

Cluster 28. Houten loods / Barak H.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 28. Wooden shed / Barrack H.

NEW HOLLANDIC WATER LINE

Introduction

WOODEN SHED / BARRACK H, as an example of an accommodation for troops or group accommodation with sanitary facilities. In various places, within and outside fort grounds, over the course of decades, wooden, stone and metal ('tin') sheds have been established to serve as (provisional or permanent) storage space, storage, accommodation for people or material, hospital, fire service, horse stable, guardhouse, etc. A large part of these sheds has since decayed, been demolished or relocated, but others still exist in situ. Sometimes these are particularly simple structures of small size, but there are also more complex and larger examples. Of the wooden sheds that were built on the Fort aan de Klop in the 19th century, two still exist - Shed E, the largest and the one closest to the tower and Shed D (/a) - which are located next to each other in the southern part of the fort. Furthermore there are still two sheds from the early 20th century: an iron shed, which was placed around 1905 and a wooden shed from 1914. Slightly to the south of the fort commander's dwelling - and thus also outside the fort moat - there is also a Wooden Shed / Barrack H, which is presumed to date from around 1913. A Wooden Shed I, which was located to the west of Barrack H, no longer exists.

Description

WOODEN SHED / BARRACK H, presumed to be from approximately 1913, on rectangular plan (approx. 24 x 8 m), covered by a gabled roof between gable ends. The roof ridge of the shed / barrack is oriented approximately north-south. Interior with large double-walled space with a simple truss structure and stove recess. In the side elevation a double door and windows. The sanitary part of the building is executed in stone and possibly dates from (shortly) after the Second World War.

Valuation

The WOODEN SHED / BARRACK H at the Fort aan de Klop is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus was realised and subsequently by others for approximately 125 years was strengthened and improved.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of wooden building related to military-strategic architecture, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (20th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthening offensive means (20th century).

This is here a wooden troops accommodation from approximately 1913.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative because it is an example of an authentic wooden barrack installed at a defensive structure.

* The component is reasonably well preserved because main form and structural detailing, as well as various elements have remained intact or recognisable.
