The register's description

Cluster 28. Houten Opslagloods E.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 28. Wooden Storage Shed E.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Introduction

WOODEN STORAGE SHED E as an example of non-bomb-proof storage of equipment (artillery). Over the course of decades, wooden, stone and metal ('tin') sheds have been built in various locations within and outside fort grounds to serve as (provisional or permanent) storage space, storage, shelter for people or equipment, hospital, fire station, horse stable, guardhouse, etc. A large part of these sheds has since decayed, demolished or relocated, but others still exist in situ. Sometimes these are particularly simple structures of small scale, but there are also more complex and larger examples. Of the wooden sheds built in the 19th century at the Fort aan de Klop, two still exist - Shed E, the largest and located closest to the tower and Shed D (/a) - which are situated next to each other on the southern part of the fort. Furthermore, there are still two examples from the early 20th century: an iron shed, which was placed around 1905, and a wooden example from 1914. Outside the actual fort grounds, there are also the Wooden Shed / Barrack H and a Wooden Barn. Like the other sheds, Shed E was restored in the first years of the 21st century, during which it was made suitable for use for catering purposes.

Description

WOODEN STORAGE SHED E from 1898 (artillery shed), on a rectangular ground plan (approx. 20.50 x 8.00 m). The shed is constructed from wooden, horizontally applied, green-painted plank sections and is covered by a gabled roof clad with pantiles, between gable-end walls with slight overhang and wind braces on through-going girders. In the interior wooden trusses with iron tie rods. White four-pane windows on the ground floor and in the gable-end walls. The interior has been modified to create space for a catering function.

Valuation

The WOODEN STORAGE SHED E at the Fort aan de Klop is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 onwards by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of wooden construction related to military-strategic building techniques, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthening offensive means (19th century).

This concerns a wooden storage shed from 1898.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also because of the functional and physical relationship with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative because it is an example of an authentic wooden storage shed installed on a defensive work.

* The component is reasonably well preserved because the main form and building details, as well as various elements have remained intact, or have been restored through shell-core restoration.
