NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 28. Fortification with earthworks and main rampart.
NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE
Introduction
FORTIFICATION WITH EARTHWORKS AND MAIN RAMPART, WET MOAT AND OUTER BANKS, WITH (DIVERSION AND MAINTENANCE) ROADS AND WITH THE ZONE ORIGINALLY MARKED BY BOUNDARY POSTS as fundamental components of the defensive works of the Fort aan de Klop. The Fort aan de Klop is one of the oldest forts belonging to the New Hollandic Waterline. The Fort aan de Klop and comparable works were usually constructed on the basis of earthen bodies laid down in advance, which served as a foundation and were meant to prevent subsidence in (wet and soft) soil. In the construction of the works, in addition to this usually tactically 'pre-formed' earthen body - which in itself already fulfilled or could fulfill a defensive role - a specific layout was also realised. The layout was intended to increase defensive strength, ensure the safety of the garrison and facilitate internal and external transport and traffic. This resulted, among other things, in earthen coverings for various structures, to make them less vulnerable to enemy fire, earthen ramparts that covered buildings and open areas and determined contours, covered passages, paved paths and parade grounds. The earthworks were laid out in ground plans that differed greatly from each other, often with one or more bastions, which could also vary in form. Around the earthen body came - where possible - a wet moat. Usually spanning the moat was a (partly removable) bridge - various types occur - but sometimes there was a fixed bank connection, for example in the form of a dam. These are elements that may form part of the road system. Along the outer side of the moats, there was often a road or path - possibly laid out in the form of a covered way or envelope, but sometimes at or even above ground level. These roads or paths could have various functions, ranging from public road to maintenance path, and from military covered way to exclusive access road to the fort. Outside the wet moat, there is moreover often a zone (of old and sometimes still partly) marked with boundary posts (limit posts) as such, over which the Ministry of War had authority, the so-called Military Crown Land. The Fort aan de Klop does not differ in principle from this general picture; however, a relatively rare element is the small bomb-proof tower, centrally located on the work. Bastions are absent here, but the mainly five-sided ground plan has at the western side a somewhat receding course of the main rampart, which creates a zigzagging rampart here. Remarkable is that the fort is not situated in the axis of the Klopvaart and the Klopdijk, but slightly to the west of it.
Description
FORTIFICATION WITH EARTHWORKS AND MAIN RAMPART, WET MOAT AND OUTER BANKS, WITH (DIVERSION AND MAINTENANCE) ROADS AND WITH THE ZONE ORIGINALLY MARKED BY BOUNDARY POSTS as basic elements and contours of the defensive work Fort aan de Klop and originally dating from 1819-1821. The fort, in its current form mainly dating from the first half of the 19th century, has a roughly five-sided ground plan, which is entirely surrounded by a moat. On the western side the rampart angles slightly inward, creating a zigzag course; the ground plan thus has four obtuse angles and two (virtually) right angles, as well as a very obtuse 'inward angle' on the western side. Along the edges of the fort body an earthen main rampart has been laid out in which there may be remains or traces of gun emplacements. The moat of the Fort aan de Klop is still completely present; outside the moat, among other things the Groeneweg - now the 1st Polderweg (north and east side) - functions as an access and maintenance road as part of the layout. The entrance to the fort, with bridge and connection to the Klopvaart / Klopdijk and the Vechtdijk, is located on the east side, but this connection (virtually entirely) and the Vechtdijk (entirely) fall outside the layout. The delimitation of the layout coincides with that of the (formerly) boundary-post-marked area. This zone originally marked with boundary posts as such - the Military Crown Land - over which the Ministry of War had authority, forms the starting point for the boundary map belonging to this document and therefore also includes the lands located to the southeast of the fort on the Vechtdijk where, among other things, a shed / barrack H and the fort keeper's dwelling are located.
Valuation
The FORTIFICATION WITH EARTHWORKS AND MAIN RAMPART, WET MOAT AND OUTER BANKS, WITH (DIVERSION AND MAINTENANCE) ROADS AND WITH THE ZONE ORIGINALLY MARKED BY BOUNDARY POSTS of the Fort aan de Klop is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for more than 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building practice, which is based on:
- the system of inundation and access defence (19th century),
- the race with increasingly powerful offensive means (19th century).
The component is an example of an earthen layout with moat, diversion road and military zone marked by boundary posts, mainly from the period 1819-1821.
* Ensemble value and situational values through its location within the system of the New Hollandic Waterline in general and through the recognisable relationship with the Klopvaart and the Klopdijk in particular.
* The component is representative because it is a good example of the layout of a fort that served as part of the defence of an access, a sluice and an inundation channel.
* The component is fairly well preserved because the ground plan, the moat and the maintenance path have remained virtually intact.
