NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

Remnant of a DOUBLE CULVERT LOCK / DAM LOCK as a distinctive hydraulic engineering element belonging to the inundation works of the New Hollandic Waterline within the Land of Altena. Located to the northeast of the pumping station De Drie Sluizen, a small dam lock that is architecturally combined with a culvert lock. The defence system of the New Hollandic Waterline was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) areas of terrain. By means of an ingenious system of locks, culverts, dams, retaining walls, dike breaches, and so forth, the necessary water level could be rapidly established and maintained within narrow limits. In part, use was made of already existing civil water management structures. Sometimes the works were (substantially) adapted to military requirements. A limited portion of the works was specially constructed for the purposes of the New Hollandic Waterline and sometimes special account was taken of this. To the northeast of the pumping station De Drie Sluizen, in order to establish an inundation, the connection between adjacent lands on either side of one of the channels had to be severable. For this purpose, a double-constructed, closable culvert was built, which could optionally permit water drainage from the southeastern area. Of the constituent heads, one lies on the northwest side of the water and the other (the double one) on the southeast side. The work lies largely stripped of context on and at the bank of the watercourse.

Description

Architecturally combined DOUBLE CULVERT LOCK / DAM LOCK, consisting of two opposite, largely exposed heads of brickwork and topped with natural stone, and wings, with on the southwest side attached to it the head of a slightly skew-placed second culvert that permitted controlled drainage. The work consists of two opposite heads with between them a non-visible pipe and on either side slot-beam seatings for closure of the pipe, whereby a function as dam lock was created. To the southwest of this, a second culvert, which consists of only a single closable head and which is provided with an arched opening and on the other side a pipe visible below the water surface. No winding gear is present.

Valuation

The DOUBLE CULVERT LOCK / DAM LOCK to the northeast of the pumping station De Drie Sluizen is of general importance by reason of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others for approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of construction related to military-strategic building science, which is based on the system of inundation and accessway defence. This concerns an expression of historical hydraulic engineering related to military-strategic building science, in the form of a double-constructed culvert.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also by reason of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is reasonably well preserved because the main form, the architectural detailing and adaptation to the functions of the culverts have remained well recognizable, but their embedding in the immediate surroundings has been lost.

* The component is reasonably representative (characteristic) because it recognizably demonstrates the former function for the purposes of the New Hollandic Waterline.
