Inleiding

Introduction

Former SCHOOLMASTER'S HOUSE; a carefully detailed building constructed around 1878 in eclectic forms. The dwelling was part of an adjacent public school dating from the same period and constructed in identical forms. This was closed in 1922 and later converted into a shop. The former school falls outside the protection granted by the national government. The building is situated on the southern side of the built-up area of Nieuwendijk on the west side of the Rijksweg; the old dyke connection with Werkendam.

Description

Small dwelling of one storey on a rectangular ground plan with facades of machine brick laid in English bond under a hipped roof tiled with Oegstgeester tiles with two brick chimneys at the ridge ends. The building has a simple gutter. The facades are provided with corner pilasters in fair-faced brickwork and a slightly projecting plinth. The front facade has three bays: a central entrance bay flanked by two window bays. The entrance bay is given extra emphasis by being extended through to the roof plane by means of a roof dormer. The cheeks of the roof dormer have a stylised floral ornament in a recessed triangular field. The central bay has, furthermore, a pilaster frame of decorative brickwork with a pediment crest. All windows and the door are flush and have a profiled cement surround with hood moulding. Above the windows a second surround has been applied which is rectangular in form and consists of yellow bricks, hollowed out in a diamond shape. The door has both wooden and glazed panels and is provided with a fanlight containing coloured leaded glass.

Windows with single-rut sash frames and coloured leaded glass in the fanlights. The roof dormer has a window with semi-circular crest containing a four-rut opening window and fanlight with glazing bars. The facades stand out because of the careful detailing and brick ornaments. This finds expression, amongst other things, in the moulded dentil course with buttons, the yellow and red facing brick used in various places, and the moulded stones in the capitals of the pilasters. The course is further ornamented with hollowed-out bricks and has at the corners two cast-iron tie anchors. The side facades are by and large identical in their detailing of windows, pilasters and course to the front facade. In the northern gable are a window and a blocked-up door opening. Its surround is still present. In the roof slope a small roof dormer under a flat roof has been inserted. In the southern gable there is only one window which is somewhat wider than the others. In the roof slope a roof dormer and a roof window have been inserted. A roof dormer has also been placed on the rear side of the roof slope. The rear facade has been greatly altered by the addition of two single-storey building units functioning as a kitchen and scullery.

Interior to the building is a central corridor with marble paving and plinths. The corridor is flanked by rooms on either side. The right room at the front is now in use as a kitchen; at an earlier stage this was situated at the rear. The original ornamental work has been largely concealed from view by, amongst other things, lowered ceilings and wall panelling. The corridor leads to a plain wooden flight of stairs. Beneath this staircase is the entrance to the rectangular cellar. This is tiled and has a simple beam ceiling.

Assessment

The former schoolmaster's house is of general interest. The building has cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of socio-economic development, namely the establishment of small-scale schools with associated schoolmaster's houses in smaller settlements; it is also important as an example of the typological development of the dwelling. The object is of architectural-historical importance because of the eclectic style elements applied, the detailing and the particular use of materials. The house is important because of the architectural integrity of both the interior and the exterior. It is important because of its typological rarity.
