NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding
WACHTGEBOUWTJE gebouw J, als naoorlogse toevoeging aan het Fort bij de Nieuwe Steeg. Militaire terreinen en gebouwen zijn van oudsher afgesloten, moeilijk of niet toegankelijk en / of bewaakt. De bewaking van toegangen tot militaire terreinen en gebouwen vergde speciale voorzieningen, waaronder wacht- of waakhuizen, poortgebouwen, hekwerken en wachtgebouwen. In het laatste geval gaat het om sterk uiteenlopende bouwsels, die kunnen variëren van zware metselwerken en / of bomvrije onderkomens tot eenvoudige houten huisjes. WACHTGEBOUWTJE, gebouw J
Links van de toegangsbrug gelegen, in gele baksteen met rode plint opgetrokken gebouwtje op een vrijwel vierkante plattegrond. Het is gedekt door een met bitumen gedekt, piramidevormig dak met hierop centraal een bakstenen schoorsteen en het heeft mastgoten rondom. In de hoofdgevel (zuidoost) links twee vensters met in vieren gedeelde ramen en rechts een toegang met houten deur. In de overliggende zijde twee en de zuidwestzijde drie vensteropeningen met vergelijkbare ramen; aan de noordoostzijde twee kleine, hoge raampjes. Interieur bevat een eenvoudige schouw.
Waardering
WACHTGEBOUWTJE, gebouw J van het Fort bij de Nieuwe Steeg is van algemeen belang vanwege:
* Cultuurhistorische waarden als onderdeel van de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie zoals deze is ontworpen door C.R.T. Kraijenhoff en in eerste aanleg vanaf 1815 door hem, Jan Blanken en majoor-ingenieur Willem Offerhaus is gerealiseerd en daarna door anderen gedurende ongeveer 125 jaar versterkt en verbeterd. Het wachtgebouwtje is pas toegevoegd nadat structurele verbeteringen waren stopgezet.
* Architectuurhistorische waarden in het bijzonder als uiting van de militair-strategische bouwkunde.
Het betreft hier een niet versterkt onderdeel uit de naoorlogse periode, namelijk een in 1953 toegevoegd wachtgebouwtje.

Introduction
WATCHHOUSE, building J, as a post-war addition to the Fort at the Nieuwe Steeg. Military sites and buildings have traditionally been closed, difficult or inaccessible and/or guarded. The guarding of entrances to military sites and buildings required special provisions, including watch or guard houses, gate buildings, fencing and watch buildings. In the latter case, these are highly diverse structures, which can range from heavy masonry and/or bomb-proof shelters to simple wooden cottages. WATCHHOUSE, building J
Located to the left of the access bridge, a small building constructed in yellow brick with a red plinth on an almost square floor plan. It is covered by a pyramid-shaped roof covered with bitumen and has a brick chimney centrally placed on it and has gutters all around. In the main facade (south-east) on the left two windows with four-pane glazing bars and on the right an entrance with a wooden door. On the opposite side two and on the south-west side three window openings with similar glazing; on the north-east side two small, high windows. Interior contains a simple fireplace.
Valuation
WATCHHOUSE, building J of the Fort at the Nieuwe Steeg is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus, and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years. The watchhouse was only added after structural improvements had ceased.
* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic building design.
