NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

NISSEN HUT / STORAGE BUILDING / MAGAZINE, as a later added component of a small fort with earthwork fortifications built around the mid-19th century for the closure and defence of inundation works and of the river access of the Linge. Nissen huts or barrel sheds were invented during the First World War by the Canadian P. N. Nissen and were subsequently applied in various forms worldwide, also for non-military purposes. This specimen is presumed to have been placed around 1950 and can be considered as one of the last additions to the work. The building is situated near the lock, roughly opposite the entrance to the fort and with its longitudinal direction running from southwest to northeast. The Nissen hut was (and is) presumed to have been used as a storage building / magazine.

Description

NISSEN HUT / STORAGE BUILDING / MAGAZINE, of around 1950, at the Fort bij Asperen is a single-storey brick structure, as far as both gabled ends are concerned, on a rectangular floor plan (approximately 12 x 5 m), covered by a semicircular roof made of metal corrugated sheet. Both gabled ends contain an access opening beneath a brick lintel, with double wooden doors and, on either side adjoining this, an approximately square window opening, provided with shutters. Above the access openings a ventilation grille. The interior was not visited.

Valuation

The NISSEN HUT / STORAGE BUILDING / MAGAZINE at the Fort bij Asperen is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values, as a component of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic engineering, which is based on and was added to: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th and 20th centuries).

This concerns an example of a hall that is easily (re)portable, made largely of iron corrugated sheets, of a type that since its invention has been applied in many places and in numerous functions.

* Ensemble value and situational values as a component of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative because it is a good example of the application of this type of hall in a military function.

* The component is fairly well preserved because form and storage function are still clearly recognisable and also functionally (can) be.
