Introduction

FORT KEEPER'S DWELLING as part of a small fort with earthwork reinforcements built around the middle of the 19th century for the defence of inundation works and of the river access of the Linge. Because most forts and other (defensive works situated outside built-up areas) - when there was no mobilisation or exercises - did not have a garrison of military personnel, in many cases there was a separate dwelling or other form of accommodation for a manager or watcher. Sometimes such a dwelling or accommodation also had another function, such as that of a bridge or lock keeper's dwelling. In the applied architecture there is consequently no uniformity; the building material used varies, but is usually brick or wood and the number of storeys also differs. As regards the location of a watcher's dwelling, no clear standards exist either; some fort keeper's dwellings are located within the fort ditch, others outside - sometimes even at some distance from the fort. The present fort keeper's dwelling at the Fort at Asperen is a relatively late - presumably built around 1930 - addition to the complex, replacing the original specimen demolished in 1914. Description

The FORT KEEPER'S DWELLING of the Fort at Asperen is located on the left side of the fort's entrance. The brick dwelling is a single-storey building on a rectangular floor plan, covered by a gabled roof tiled with smothered, (newly) improved hollow tiles. The gutter forms a small overhang; in both roof slopes a brick chimney flue. The southern long facade contains a central entrance under a canopy, and to the left and right window openings with wide, double casement windows under fanlights subdivided by glazing bars into four panes. The western gable end contains on the ground floor two similar windows with between them traces of a facade alteration (sealed entrance); in the gable end a presumably similarly altered window with three panes. The eastern gable end contains on the left a window opening comparable to the others on the ground floor and on the right an entrance. Northern long facade has similar windows. The windows on the ground floor provided with painted wooden shutters. The interior was not visited.

Valuation

The FORT KEEPER'S DWELLING of the Fort at Asperen is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values, as components of the New Holland Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of building related to military-strategic architecture.

This is a component from the period 1925-1940, namely a military service dwelling.
