NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Waardering

NEW HOLLANDIC WATER LINE

Introduction

CONCRETE GUARD HOUSE / GUARD BUILDING as a small constructed component of the Fort at Asperen. Access to forts, barracks and other military works and buildings was usually guarded from an armoured or unarmoured guard house or guard building. Also fort-keeper's residences or gate buildings were constructed at the entrance, with or without mixed functions. In a number of cases specific guard buildings were realized with exceptional characteristics. At the Fort at Asperen, around 1915 a small, splinter-proof, concrete guard house was placed near the entrance. This is a unique example, which moreover is recorded as a concrete experiment.

Description

Freestanding CONCRETE GUARD HOUSE / GUARD BUILDING, executed as a slightly more than man-height and more or less rectangular concrete structure, with the entrance to the right of the centre of the front side. In it a heavy sheet-iron door with heavy fittings and to the left of this a narrow horizontal viewing slit set out in the cast concrete. The guard house was considered a 'splinter-proof' shelter.

Valuation

CONCRETE GUARD HOUSE / GUARD BUILDING is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values, as part of the New Hollandic Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realized from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic architecture, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th and 20th centuries), b. the race with increasingly powerful offensive weapons (19th and 20th centuries)

This concerns a unique example of a concrete guard house from the second decade of the 20th century, which is also known as a concrete experiment.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and because of its location at the entrance to the fort.

* The component is unique because it is a sole surviving example of military concrete experiments for serial production of this type of defensive measures.

* The component is moderately well preserved, but can be clearly recognized by its location and also in terms of its function.
