Cluster 61. Schuilplaats met verbruiksmagazijn C/bomvrij gebouw.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 61. Shelter with consumption store C / bombproof building.

NEW DUTCH WATERLINE

Introduction

SHELTER WITH CONSUMPTION STORE C / BOMBPROOF BUILDING as a refuge secured against impacts of projectiles by an earth covering. With the increase in the range of artillery, the force of the impacts of projectiles and the explosive force of (high-explosive) grenades it became increasingly difficult to offer resistance to bombardments. Thickening of masonry, application of shock-absorbing masonry systems (amongst other things by means of arches), gentle slope angles and curved or conversely pointed forms, use of concrete and later of reinforced concrete in increasingly heavy execution, was one of the ways to keep the fortifications able to withstand increasing offensive force. Moreover, the application of earth coverings proved to be a good means of absorbing or dampening the energy. This is the reason why many mortared or concrete works are provided with an earth layer or a front protection of sand or earth. Depending on the period of origin - and thus the expected impact force of projectiles - the term 'bombproof buildings' was used, when they were considered to be capable of withstanding a predetermined number of impacts of heavy calibre.

Description

Located directly behind and partly in the courtine of the eastern fort wall and covered by earthwork on three sides, SHELTER WITH CONSUMPTION STORE C / BOMBPROOF BUILDING, dating from the period 1878-1882. In the 20th century provided with a new facade. In this facade an arched entrance with double wooden door from the period 1878-1882.

Valuation

SHELTER WITH CONSUMPTION STORE C / BOMBPROOF BUILDING at Fort Honswijk is of general interest because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Dutch Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 realised by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others over approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthened offensive means (19th century).

This concerns a component from the period 1878-1882 and which is an example of a shelter with consumption store.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Dutch Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is well preserved because characteristic components have been retained and remain recognisable.
