Cluster 61.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding
Omschrijving
FORTAANLEG MET AARDWERKEN, (RESTEN VAN) EMPLACEMENTEN, SCHUILPLAATSEN EN DERGELIJKE, WEGEN, NATTE GRACHT MET (BUITEN)OEVERS EN DEEL OMLEIDINGSWEG EN MET (DOOR GRENSPALEN AANGEDUIDE) MILITAIRE LANDSGROND van Fort Honswijk.
Waardering

Description
Cluster 61. Fort complex with earthworks, (remains of) emplacements shelters and the like, roads, wet moat with (outer) banks and part of diversion road and with (marked by boundary posts) military Crown land.
NEW HOLLANDIC WATER LINE
Introduction
FORT COMPLEX WITH EARTHWORKS, (REMAINS OF) EMPLACEMENTS, SHELTERS AND THE LIKE, ROADS, WET MOAT WITH (OUTER) BANKS AND PART OF DIVERSION ROAD AND WITH (MARKED BY BOUNDARY POSTS) MILITARY CROWN LAND as basic components of a concentrated defensive work near a river access.
Forts were usually constructed on the basis of pre-constructed earthworks, which served as a foundation and were to prevent subsidence in (a wet and soft) soil. In the construction of the forts, besides this usually already tactically 'pre-formed' earthwork - which could itself already fulfil a defensive role - a specific layout was also realised, which was intended to increase defensive strength, ensure the safety of the garrison and facilitate internal and external transport and traffic. This resulted in, among other things, earth coverings for various buildings and shelters, to make them less vulnerable to hostile fire, earth ramparts that covered the buildings and open areas and which determined the contours, as well as paved paths, parade grounds and emplacements for artillery. On one of the open spaces on the fort there is a copy - made after the Second World War - of a memorial monument to mobilisation in the First World War. The replica of the monument, which consists of ironwork with inscriptions, moreover does not lie on the original site and falls outside the protection. Forts were usually surrounded by one or more wet or dry moats to hinder any approach to the rampart or fort area until the last moment. The forts were usually only accessible via one or more bridges or via a narrow isthmus. Where for water management or other reasons a permanent direct connection between internal and external area existed, it was constructed in such a way that it could not or only with great difficulty be traversed. Use of so-called chevaux-de-frise, monks (particularly at fortifications) and/or ironwork was customary. The moat of Fort Honswijk was of particular character because on the south side it could be connected via a large inundation lock with the Lek and on the east and north sides with the Inundation Canal. Of the inundation locks only the one on the east side of the fort is still present. The one on the northeast side has been removed and the large lock on the Lek has been partly demolished and worked underground due to dike reinforcement. Important remains or traces of both may possibly still be present in the soil. Along the outside of the moats there was often a road or path, which could be laid in the form of a covered way, as well as level with or even above ground level. These roads or paths could have different functions, ranging from public road to maintenance path, and also from military covered way to exclusive access route to the fort. Outside the wet moat there is moreover often a (traditionally and still partly) marked with boundary posts zone over which the Ministry of War had authority, the Military Crown Land. Fort Honswijk does not deviate in principle from this picture, but includes one of the few large towers in combination with a counterscarp gallery.
Description
FORT COMPLEX WITH EARTHWORKS, (REMAINS OF) EMPLACEMENTS, SHELTERS AND THE LIKE, ROADS, WET MOAT WITH (OUTER) BANKS AND PART OF DIVERSION ROAD AND WITH (MARKED BY BOUNDARY POSTS) MILITARY CROWN LAND of Fort Honswijk. Fort Honswijk currently consists essentially of a roughly rectangular, asymmetrical earthwork with different levels and with in plan four differently executed bastions, the outer talus slopes of which have rounded forms. Between the two frontal bastions a straight curtain. The layout and earthworks date mainly from the periods 1841-1848 and 1871-1886. By far the largest is the southwestern, more or less round bastion on which the tower is constructed. The three other bastions, of which the northeastern is the largest, have an angular ground plan. Earthworks enclose the flat terrace or terreplein almost entirely, while the bomb-proof buildings and the counterscarp gallery are also covered with earthworks. The fort was built at the T-junction of the Northern Lek Dike and the then inundation water the Snel - and later the Inundation Canal - with the result that the (public) road over the Lek Dike had to be led north around the fort. The main form still strongly corresponds to the form found on the detail plans of the Topographic and Military Map of the Netherlands from around 1850 and the area is still largely in the condition drawn on a ground plan of 1909. The fort area is intersected by a path system lined with brick tiles with predominantly straight lines, along which the buildings and other functions and components are accessible. These functions include, among other things, some so-called remises (bomb-proof storage places for artillery, ammunition or other material). The moating of Fort Honswijk is still almost completely present and forms an ample frame of the fort layout. Only on the west side was the fort traditionally accessible over an isthmus. The public diversion road lies on the eastern and northern outer banks of the wet moat. The road leads on the east side with a bridge over the partially silted but otherwise still clearly recognizable inundation lock there. Of a second, smaller inundation lock, on the northeast side of the fort, remains or traces may possibly still be present underground. Of the large inundation lock east of the fort, the basins/heads would be preserved in the reinforced northern Lek Dike. The zone originally marked with boundary posts as such, the Military Crown Land, over which the Ministry of War had authority, is indicated on the map belonging to this document and in principle belongs to the protected area.
Valuation
FORT COMPLEX WITH EARTHWORKS, (REMAINS OF) EMPLACEMENTS, SHELTERS AND THE LIKE, ROADS, WET MOAT WITH (OUTER) BANKS AND PART OF DIVERSION ROAD AND WITH (MARKED BY BOUNDARY POSTS) MILITARY CROWN LAND of Fort Honswijk is of general interest because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and first constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for more than 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic building science, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthening offensive means (19th century).
The component is an example of an earthen complex with road and path system, earth covering for different functions, moating, diversion road and military zone marked by means of boundary posts from the period 1841-1864 that was improved and expanded in a later development phase (1871-1886).
* Archaeological values because of possible traces and remains in the soil of one or more locks, trenches, emplacements and the like.
* Ensemble value and situational values because of its location within the system of the New Hollandic Water Line in general and in particular in the virtually intact relationship with the field of fire.
* The component is representative because it shows different phases in the development of access defence on a large scale and in a virtually undamaged physical environment.
* The component is well preserved because it has shown the system of protection by means of earth covering and the likewise almost unchanged ground plan in an almost unchanged state since around 1900.
