Cluster 59. Fortwachterswoning.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 59. Fort keeper's dwelling.

NEW HOLLAND WATER LINE

Introduction

FORT KEEPER'S DWELLING at the Work at the Korte Uitweg as part of the fort complex. Because most forts and other defence works (located outside built-up areas) did not have a garrison of military personnel when there was no mobilisation or exercises, in many cases there was a separate dwelling or other accommodation for a caretaker or watchman. Sometimes such a dwelling or accommodation also had another function, such as that of lock keeper's dwelling or bridge keeper's house. Regarding the form and location of a watchman's dwelling, no clear standards exist; the building material also varies, but usually brick or wood was used. Most dwellings, however, have a rectangular plan with one storey and are covered by a gabled roof with tile covering. The dwelling at the Work at the Korte Uitweg is no exception to this. However, a location outside the fort ditch occurs less frequently.

Description

FORT KEEPER'S DWELLING (1877-1878) of the Work at the Korte Uitweg, located along the west side of the Lange Uitweg, south-west of the fort. The white-rendered brick dwelling is a single-storey structure with a rectangular plan, covered by a gabled roof laid with damped cross tiles, with on the west side a cuckoo window one window bay wide and a brick chimney on the left. The eastern facade (towards the fort side) partly extended, with arched windows with sash windows on left and right. The northern gable end contains two similar windows and a smaller example in the top gable. The gutter supported by slightly projecting bricks. South and west facades modified.

Valuation

The FORT KEEPER'S DWELLING of the Work at the Korte Uitweg is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus, and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of building associated with military-strategic construction, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly powerful offensive means (19th century).

This concerns a component from the period 1871-1886, namely a military service dwelling from 1877-1878.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Water Line. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and because of the characteristic location on the gorge side of the fort.

* The component is representative because it is an example of a fort keeper's dwelling fitted out at a defence work.

* The component is reasonably well preserved because the main form and building details, as well as various components, have remained intact.
