The register's description

Cluster 59. Bomvrij bouwwerk/kazerne A.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 59. Bombproof Building/Barracks A.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Introduction

The BOMBPROOF BUILDING / BARRACKS A of the Work on the Korte Uitweg is of a type of bombproof structure that is provided with an earth covering on three sides and on top and that has only a facade on the gorge side. With the increase in the range of artillery, the force of projectile impacts and the explosive power of (brisant) grenades it became increasingly difficult to withstand bombardment. Thickening of masonry, application of shock-absorbing masonry systems (among other means through the use of arches), shallow slope angles and curved or pointed forms, use of concrete - and later of reinforced concrete - in increasingly heavy construction, was one of the ways to keep the fortifications resistant to increasing attack force. Moreover, the application of earth coverings had proved to be a good means of absorbing or damping energy. This is why many masonry or concrete works were provided with a layer of earth or a frontal protection of sand or earth. Depending on the period of construction - and thus the expected impact force of projectiles - one spoke of 'bombproof buildings', when they were believed to be able to withstand a predetermined number of impacts from heavy calibre.

Description

The BOMBPROOF BUILDING / BARRACKS A of the Work on the Korte Uitweg lies opposite the access bridge and comprises one storey under an earth covering. The building dates, according to a sandstone foundation stone from 1877. The only facade is executed in brick and is oriented towards the gorge side (west). The facade is subdivided into seven bays, with arched access and / or window openings; all bays spanned by triple relieving arches. Both ends of the facade curved backwards. Ventilation and / or smoke channels projecting from the earth covering. Wooden doors and shutters in the facade openings. The interior contains whitewashed, arched rooms with arched internal connections.

Valuation

BOMBPROOF BUILDING / BARRACKS A of the Work on the Korte Uitweg is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic building construction, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the competition with increasingly strengthening offensive means (19th century).

This concerns a component from 1876-1878, which is an example of a bombproof building that is covered on all sides - except the gorge side - by thick earth layers.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative (characteristic) because it is a good example of a bombproof building from this period.

* The component is well preserved because it has retained the characteristics from the construction and functional time in its architecture and detailing.
