Cluster 59. Houten loods.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Omschrijving

Cluster 59. Wooden shed.

NEW HOLLAND WATER LINE

Introduction

WOODEN SHED, as part of the Work at the Korte Uitweg. At various locations within and outside fort grounds, wooden, stone and metal ('tin') sheds have been constructed over the course of decades to serve as (provisional or permanent) storage space, stores, accommodation for people or materials, hospital, fire station, horse stable, guardhouse, etc. A large part of these sheds has since deteriorated, been demolished or relocated, but others still exist in situ. Sometimes these are very simple structures of small size, but there are also more complex and larger examples. A wooden shed from 1879 at the Work at the Korte Uitweg was demolished in 1910 and replaced by the still-existing example. The shed has undergone extensive restoration in recent times.

Description

WOODEN SHED at the Work at the Korte Uitweg, dating from circa 1910-1920, and located south of the barracks. A free-standing, single-storey building comprising five window bays, with a rectangular plan (approximately 19 x 9 m) under a gabled roof covered with damped hollow tiles, with several roof lights inserted. The green-painted facades rest on a brick plinth and are constructed of horizontally placed wooden elements. White-painted wind braces. The window openings are fitted with white-painted, glazing-bar divided, double casement windows; single and double wooden doors, partly at loft level.

Valuation

The WOODEN SHED at the Work at the Korte Uitweg is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus, and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic building practice, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly powerful offensive means (19th century).

This concerns a component from around 1910-1920, which is an example of a wooden shed for storage purposes.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Water Line. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative (characteristic) because it is a good example of a non-bomb-proof storage facility.

* The component is well preserved because it has retained the characteristics of its construction and functional period in its architecture and detailing.
