NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

J.A.F. Backer.

Waardering

Cluster 12. Pumping station and associated waterworks.

NEW HOLLAND WATER LINE

Introduction

PUMPING STATION AND ASSOCIATED WATERWORKS along the east bank of the Vecht, as civil and military facilities for water management of the Polder Dorssewaard, northeast of the village of Vreeland. The defence system of the New Holland Water Line was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) land areas. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of waterworks, such as sluices, weirs, watercourses and canals, by means of which the water level could be set and maintained quickly and within narrow limits. The watercourses and canals were often already present at the location and required at most some adjustment, but in a number of cases they were specifically dug to serve the water line. Sometimes inundation (or the reversal or regulation thereof) required the use of a pumping station and/or associated waterworks; this was among other things the case with the Polder Dorssewaard. Interior contains among other things a centrifugal pump, originally with a petroleum engine; now electrically driven. Surrounded on three sides by ditches and meadow and accessible via a small bridge.

Description

PUMPING STATION AND ASSOCIATED WATERWORKS along the east bank of the Vecht and built in 1895 for the water management of the Polder Dorssewaard. Small, rectangular, brick building, covered by a gabled roof tiled with peg tiles between shouldered spout gables. The small building stands on a massive plinth, is three bays wide and contains on the entrance side on the left a round-headed access with affixed wooden door and to the right of this two round-headed windows divided by cast-iron glazing bars within rectangular spandrels. Longitudinal facade with three blind spandrels. The end sides provided with spandrels with double peak. Memorial stone with inscription of the laying of the foundation stone by the Honourable J.A.F. Backer.

Valuation

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 realised by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others for approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of a structure related to military-strategic engineering, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century).

This is an expression related to military-strategic engineering of historical hydraulic engineering, namely a pumping station from 1895.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Water Line. Also by virtue of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative (characteristic) because it is an example of a pumping station with secondary function within the New Holland Water Line.

* The component is well preserved because main form, constructional detailing and various components are still present and easily recognisable.
