NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 10. Artillery Shed.

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

ARTILLERY SHED as non-bomb-proof, constructed component of Fort Werk IV within the Offensive for Naarden. Naarden has long been an important fortified town, but the city was vulnerable due to its high location on the foothills of the Gooi, which offered access to Amsterdam. Besides the continuous renovations to the fortification itself, defensive works were therefore erected outside Naarden from an early stage. From 1868 the Offensive for Naarden came into being. It consisted of a main work (Fort Werk IV) and four flanking works. The five works lay in a half circle to the south and east of Naarden. Among the structures originally on Fort Werk IV was a wooden artillery shed. This was destroyed by fire on New Year's Eve 1917. Not long after, a new shed was built in the same location, on the northwestern side outside the crenellated wall, this time however made of the less flammable brick. The shed was intended for the storage of artillery material.

Description

Brick ARTILLERY SHED from circa 1918, of one storey high under a gabled roof, with the ridge parallel to the northwestern part of the crenellated wall of Fort Werk IV. The shed has a rectangular floor plan and measures approximately 40 x 9 m. The side gables are provided with pilasters between which are sash windows with shutters and single doors. The end gable (west gable) originally contained only a double wooden door. The top gable is provided with a shutter and ends in a wooden weathervane with simple brace and ornamental rafters.

Valuation

The ARTILLERY SHED is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as a component of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for more than 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th and 20th centuries), b. the race with increasingly powerful offensive means (20th century).

The component is an example of a brick artillery shed from circa 1918.

* Ensemble value and situational values as a component of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is a representative example of an artillery shed with comparable main form, layout, detailing and material application, which were built on multiple forts of the New Hollandic Waterline, but which have not been preserved everywhere.

* The component is well preserved because in terms of building mass, layout and detailing it is virtually unchanged compared to the construction period and because the shed can be clearly recognized in the field in its original situation and function.
