NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 10. Bombproof Postern.

NEW HOLLAND WATER LINE

Introduction

BOMBPROOF POSTERN as an earth-covered underground passage from the centre to the south-east side of Fort Werk IV within the Offensive Line before Naarden. Naarden has long been an important fortified city, but the city was vulnerable because of its high location on the spurs of the Gooi, which provided access to Amsterdam. Apart from continuous renewals to the fortification itself, defensive works were therefore erected outside Naarden at an early stage. From 1868 onwards, the Offensive Line before Naarden was constructed. It consisted of a main work (Fort Werk IV) and four flanking works. The five works lay in a semi-circle to the south and east of Naarden. The structures on Fort Werk IV include a postern, an earth-covered 'underground' passage that allowed the troops to reach certain parts of the fort safely. The postern of Fort Werk IV could also be used as a washroom. At the south-east side of the postern was a portal with latrines. On either side of the portal were exits to the dry ditch behind the crenellated wall. The postern was built in 1868 and was considered bombproof by the standards of the time. With the introduction of the high-explosive shell from 1885 onwards, there was no longer any bombproof situation and buildings of this type could be considered obsolete.

Description

The BOMBPROOF POSTERN of Fort Werk IV from 1868 lies centrally on the fort and runs from the central terrain to behind the crenellated wall in the dry ditch on the south-east side of the fort. It is a brick structure with thick walls, which are almost completely earth-covered and were bombproof according to the standards of the time. The postern is almost entirely incorporated into the earthwork of the fort, but has unprotected brickwork on the gorge side (north-west) of the fort and the south-east side (front side). The north-west facade is flanked by two slightly angled wing walls that are provided with a hardstone coping. In this high front facade, a clamped, arched single door with fanlight has been inserted, next to which are two small windows closed off by means of shutters. The postern is approximately 40 metres long, rectangular in shape and covered with a barrel vault. At the rear (south-east side) a portal is separated that provides access via arched doors on either side to the dry ditch at the crenellated wall and that is pointed in shape, extending into the dry ditch of the glacis.

Valuation

BOMBPROOF POSTERN

The component BOMBPROOF POSTERN is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially laid out from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for more than 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building construction, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly powerful offensive weapons (19th century).

The component is an example of a bombproof postern from 1868-1870.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Water Line. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component from 1868 is representative as an example of a bombproof postern such as those built elsewhere in the New Holland Water Line according to a similar pattern and with the application of comparable building materials.

* The component is well-preserved because the postern has undergone little or no alteration compared to its situation during the construction period.
