Cluster 10. Bomvrij wachthuis Oost.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 10. Bombproof Guardhouse East.
NEW HOLLAND WATER LINE
Introduction
BOMBPROOF GUARDHOUSE EAST as a bombproof, earth-covered structure on the north-east side of the central axis of Fort Werk IV of the Offensive Line before Naarden. Naarden has long been an important fortified city, but the city was vulnerable because of its high location on the spurs of the Gooi, which provided access to Amsterdam. Apart from continuous renewals to the fortification itself, defensive works were therefore erected outside Naarden at an early stage. From 1868 onwards, the Offensive Line before Naarden was constructed. It consisted of a main work (Fort Werk IV) and four flanking works. The five works lay in a semi-circle to the south and east of Naarden. The structures on Fort Werk IV include two bombproof guardhouses. Both guardhouses have a slightly different layout and different functions. Together they encompass spaces for enlisted men, for officers, a kitchen with storage space, a powder magazine and latrines. The guardhouses were built in 1868-1870 and were considered bombproof by the standards of the time, among other things through the earth covering applied on three sides and on top. With the introduction of the high-explosive shell from 1885 onwards, there was no longer any bombproof situation and buildings of this type could be considered obsolete. On Fort Werk IV these bombproof guardhouses are called 'the casemates'.
Description
BOMBPROOF GUARDHOUSE EAST from 1868-1870 on the north-east side of Fort Werk IV, just behind the crenellated wall. The work is provided with thick walls and is earth-covered on all sides (bombproof). The guardhouse is entirely incorporated into the earthworks of the fort, except for the unprotected front facade on the north side. The front facade is provided on both sides with a wing wall and has clamped doors and recessed windows fitted with shutters. The high gable ends in a flat moulding with lattice panels with the earthwork on both sides and on top. The floor plan of the building is almost rectangular. The interior spaces are provided with barrel vaults and slightly curved rear walls.
Valuation
The BOMBPROOF GUARDHOUSE EAST of Werk IV is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially laid out from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for more than 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building construction, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly powerful offensive weapons (19th century).
The component is an example of a bombproof, earth-covered guardhouse from 1868-1870.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Water Line. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* The component from 1868-1870 is representative as an example of a bombproof guardhouse such as those built elsewhere in the New Holland Water Line according to consistent principles with the application of comparable building materials, layout and detailing.
* The component is well-preserved because the guardhouse has undergone little or no alteration compared to its situation from the construction period.
- The component is well-preserved because the guardhouse has undergone little or no alteration compared to its situation during the construction period.
