Inleiding

Introduction

BOMBPROOF GUARDHOUSE O / GUARD ROOM as former entrance to the Fort bij Vechten. Guard houses are usually stone-built, generally fortified and thus defensible structures that serve as entrance to a fortification or fort or are situated at the entrance thereof. Depending on the period of origin - and thus the expected impact force of projectiles - one spoke of 'bombproof buildings' when they were deemed capable of withstanding a previously defined number of impacts from heavy calibre.

Description

A BOMBPROOF GUARDHOUSE O situated on the southwestern side of the fort, near the current entrance, from 1869. In the masonry facade is the old, southwestern entrance to the fort. The old entrance gateway was later converted into a GUARD ROOM. In the facade is an entrance section consisting of an arched double door, flanked by an arched niche. The wall piers are rusticated. The niche was originally intended for a soldier on watch. Above the relieving arch of the niche is a rusticated listel laid in masonry with a stone capital. In the relieving arch above the double door is a keystone with the construction year laid in masonry (1869). Above it a stone plaque with the name of the fort. Three arched windows and a buttress with stone coping. Beyond the buttress the facade angles back. Here a plaque is laid in masonry in commemoration of the mobilization of 1939-1940.

Valuation

The BOMBPROOF GUARDHOUSE O / GUARD ROOM is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 realized by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others strengthened and improved over approximately 125 years.

* Military-historical values as part of a continuous military defence line between the former Zuiderzee and the Biesbosch. This consisted principally of a coherent system of inundation fields and associated inundation facilities and fields of fire. This system was supplemented with various types of built or constructed (defensive) works dating from different periods that served or contributed to the closure of non-inundatable terrain or other accesses.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic construction, which was based - on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century) - and on the competition with strengthening offensive means (19th century).

This concerns an example of a fortified, bombproof building from 1869 that served as entrance to the fort.

* Ensemble value and situational values, as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The building is representative (characteristic) because it still exhibits the physical characteristics that gave rise to the construction and conversion at the time.

* The building is reasonably well preserved because as to structure and physical appearance the main aspects of the condition in the 1870s have been preserved.
