Inleiding

Description
Cluster 42.
Introduction
BOMBPROOF FLANK BATTERY F with MAGAZINE, PRIVATE BUILDING M AND POTERNE as part of the near defence of the Fort at Vechten. Flank batteries are designed to cover the moat, projecting parts of the main wall of a fort or fortification and the terrain directly in front of it, and consist of (angled) casemates or other gun emplacements placed in the main wall. Depending on the period of construction - and thus the expected impact force of projectiles - the term 'bombproof buildings' was used when they were deemed capable of withstanding a set number of impacts from heavy calibre ordnance. Poternes are covered and/or bombproof passages, for example through the main wall, which provide access to a fort or fortification or which connect components.
Description
A BOMBPROOF FLANK BATTERY F with MAGAZINE and PRIVATE BUILDING M dating from 1869, located on the southwestern heel bastion, with a masonry facade, in which a double round-arched door - providing access to the POTERNE and the gun rooms - and an arched door - providing access to the gunpowder magazine and the private rooms. The door of the latter is flanked by an arched window. In the relieving arch above the double door a sandstone keystone is set in the masonry, in which the construction year 1869 is recorded.
Valuation
The BOMBPROOF FLANK BATTERY F with MAGAZINE, PRIVATE BUILDING M AND POTERNE is of general importance on account of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus, and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.
* Military-historical values as part of a continuous military defence line between the former Zuiderzee and the Biesbosch. This consisted principally of a coherent system of inundation fields and associated inundation works and fields of fire. This system was supplemented with various types of constructed or established defence works from different periods which served or contributed to the closure of terrain that could not be inundated or other accesses.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic construction, which was based - on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century) - and on the race with strengthening offensive means (19th century).
This is an example of a bombproof flank battery, combined with private building, magazine and poterne from 1869.
* Ensemble value and situational values, as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also on account of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* The building is representative (characteristic) because it still exhibits the physical characteristics that occasioned its construction at that time.
* The building is reasonably well preserved because as regards structure and physical appearance the essential features of the condition in the 1870s have been retained.
