Inleiding

Introduction

SHELTERS TYPE 1915 in the glacis or the outer walls of the Fort bij Vechten, as part of the adaptation of the fort to changed military engineering techniques. (Concrete) shelters formed a response to the arrival of heavy projectiles and high-explosive grenades. The latter had a high-explosive charge and caused a rain of metal fragments, which could cause many casualties. According to the weight of the grenade and the protection against it, there is a classification into resistance or protection classes, consisting of two numbers, for example W 12-15. The first indicates that the protection is sufficient for impacts of projectiles up to that calibre (in cm); the second that protection also exists against one or at most a few impacts up to this higher calibre. The earliest types of shelters offered only protection against grenade fragments and were called 'splinter-proof'. From the beginning of the 20th century, experiments were carried out with de-concentrated, small (concrete) (group) shelters. Existing, available materials such as railway rails, rubble, wooden beams and concrete slabs were sometimes used ad hoc for this purpose, but prefabricated components were also assembled or concrete was poured on site. In this way, traces of such experiments in concrete can still be found in various places within the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, whether or not unique. Shelters of Type 1915 were applied in various places; approximately 25 examples still remain, including also in the glacis of the Fort bij Rijnauwen and the Fort bij Vechten.

Description

Splinter-proof SHELTERS TYPE 1915 are single-storey accommodation structures built to a standardized design, executed in relatively thin reinforced concrete, suitable for an occupancy of 16 men. The shelters served as accommodation (waiting cover) for a group of men and were integrated into trench lines. The dimensions of the structures, built on a rectangular plan and flat-roofed, are approximately 10.90 x 1.40 x 1.80 metres. The shelters were provided with an earth covering on top and on the front side; this is partly still present or has been replaced. Two rectangular entrances, left and right in the rear side and five horizontal slit windows located between them could be closed by means of steel shutters. As far as is known, these shutters are all missing.

Valuation

The SHELTERS TYPE 1915 at the Fort bij Vechten are of general importance by virtue of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realized from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.

* Military-historical values as part of a continuous military defence line between the former Zuiderzee and the Biesbosch. This consisted mainly of a coherent system of inundation fields and associated inundation means and of fields of fire. This system was supplemented with various types of (defence) works dating from different periods, built or laid out, which served to or contributed to the closure of terrain that could not be inundated or other accesses.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic construction, which was based - on the system of inundation and access defence (19th and 20th century), - on the race with increasingly strengthened offensive means (20th century) - on the system of defence in depth (20th century).

These are some examples of shelters built in relatively thin, reinforced concrete from the period 1914-1918.

* Ensemble value and situational values, as components of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also by virtue of the functional and physical connection with the other components of the complex.

* The components are relatively rare as examples of military accommodation executed to a standardized design and they are representative (characteristic) because they are easily recognizable as components of a de-concentrated defence line added to the existing fortification system.

* The components are reasonably well preserved because they are still easily recognizable as built elements.
