Inleiding

Introduction

BOMB-PROOF REDUIT V of the Fort at Vechten, as a rare building type within the system of the New Holland Water Line. A reduit is a defensive work located within a fortification or fort that was capable of independent defence and that, after the fall of the main rampart, could potentially serve as a final defensive position. As a building type, but not in terms of function, related to the citadel or stronghold in or near fortified towns. Characteristic were the all-round defendability and the limited accessibility of a reduit. Heavy brickwork and possibly also an earth covering as protection against projectile impacts formed the main requirements for so-called bomb-proofness - the capacity to withstand impacts from heavy projectiles - and facilities for positioning and using heavy defensive weapons were also necessary and essential.

Description

Bomb-proof REDUIT V located within the fort, originally surrounded by a moat, which is now largely overgrown. The reduit, dating from 1869-1870, has a pentagonal ground plan, with a semi-circular projection at each corner. The walls are constructed of brick and provided with loopholes. The main entrance to the reduit is on the northwest side. An iron bridge with wooden floor sections over the moat that still exists on this side provides access to a vaulted, non-original door that is recessed into the facade. On both sides pilasters with natural stone capitals are built in. The roof of the reduit is covered with earth, on which a double open shelter shed is placed. The reduit has 37 rooms on the ground floor in the circumference, each with three loopholes. On the main axis behind the entrance is a corridor with stairwell, in which a cast-iron staircase in neo-Gothic style leads up to the double open shelter shed on the earth-covered roof. The staircase is supported by hexagonal cast-iron pillars. The hexagonal stiles of the stair railing are connected with trefoils. In the corner under the stairs are a privy from the building period and a washroom with a semi-circular rinsing tub. At the top of the stairwell, which is furnished with a domed roof, is an iron pulley system with differential tackle, by which the cannons were hauled up. The vault of the dome is constructed of brick and has a vaulted exit in the middle, with a semi-circular open shelter shed on both sides. The roof of the dome vault is covered with earth.

Valuation

The BOMB-PROOF REDUIT V of the Fort at Vechten is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realized from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.

* Military-historical values as part of a continuous military defence line between the former Zuiderzee and the Biesbosch. This consisted mainly of a coherent system of inundation fields and associated inundation works and field-of-fire areas. This system was supplemented with various types of built or constructed (defensive) works from different periods that served or contributed to blocking non-inundatable terrain or other accesses.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building design, which is based on - the system of inundation and access defence (19th century) and - the race with increasingly powerful offensive weapons (19th century).

This concerns a component from the period 1869-1870, namely a rarely occurring, pentagonal, bomb-proof, independently defensible structure, as part of a fort.

Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Water Line. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

The component is rare because it is one of the few reduits in the New Holland Water Line that is recognizable as such.

The component is well preserved because numerous characteristic elements in the exterior and interior have been retained and remain recognizable in terms of function.
