Inleiding

Introduction

BOMBPROOF GUARD BUILDING N / GUARD ROOM as former entrance to the Fort at Vechten. Guard buildings are usually stone-built, ordinarily fortified and thus defensible structures that function as or are located at the entrance to a fortress or fort. Depending on the period of construction - and thus the expected impact force of projectiles - one spoke of 'bombproof buildings' when they were considered to be capable of withstanding a previously defined number of heavy calibre hits.

Description

A BOMBPROOF GUARD BUILDING N located on the northwest side of the fort, from 1869. In the masonry facade is the old northwestern entrance to the fort. The old entrance gateway was later converted into a GUARD ROOM. In the facade is an entrance section, consisting of an arched double door, flanked by an arched niche. The wall piers are rusticated. The niche was originally intended for a soldier on watch. Above the relieving arch of the niche is a rusticated pilaster laid in mortar with a hard stone capital. In the relieving arch above the double door is a keystone with building year laid in (1869). Above this is a hard stone plaque with the name of the fort laid in the facade. Three arched windows and a buttress with hard stone coping. The stone is partly rusticated. Beyond the buttress the facade curves backwards.

Valuation

The BOMBPROOF GUARD BUILDING N / GUARD ROOM of the Fort at Vechten is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, as this was designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus was realized and subsequently by others over approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.

* Military-historical values as part of a continuous military defence line between the former Zuiderzee and the Biesbosch. This consisted mainly of a connected system of inundation fields and associated inundation facilities and of fire fields. This system was supplemented with diverse types of constructed or developed (defensive) works dating from different periods that served to or contributed to the closure of terrain not to be inundated or other accesses.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building art, which is based - on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century) - and on the race with the strengthening offensive means (19th century).

This concerns here an example of a fortified, bombproof building from 1869 that functioned as an entrance to the fort.

* Ensemble value and situational values, as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also because of the functional and physical connection with the other components of the complex.

* The building is representative (characteristic) because it still displays the physical characteristics that at that time gave rise to the construction and rebuilding.

* The building is reasonably well preserved because as to structure and physical appearance the main features of the condition in the 1870s are preserved.
