Inleiding
Waardering
De PARKAANLEG is van algemeen belang:
- wegens de ensemblewaarde als complexonderdeel van het ontwerp, waarbij de parkaanleg met de daarin gesitueerde objecten bewust is meegenomen in het ontwerpproces en als onlosmakelijk geheel met het gebouw zelf beschouwd dient te worden;
- wegens de sociaal-cultuurhistorische waarden waarbij de parkaanleg is ontworpen rondom het kantoorgebouw en zo een uiting is van de sociaal-economische ontwikkelingen rond de werkomgeving;
- wegens de bijzondere tuinhistorische waarde van de aanleg volgens het principe van een heempark, dat in de na-oorlogse periode zijn oorsprong had in Nederland en later internationaal navolging kreeg;
- wegens de rol van dit park in het oeuvre van C. Broerse die in samenwerking met J. Landwehr de grondlegger is van de heemparkstijl;
- wegens de tuinhistorische waarde van dit park dat een culminatie is van alle ervaringen opgedaan in eerdere heemparken van C. Broerse en vanwege de directe relatie tot het naastgelegen heempark De Braak en De Doorbraak, eveneens van zijn hand;
- wegens de samenhang met de overige complexonderdelen.

Description
Description of complex component 3
Introduction
PARK LAYOUT designed and laid out around the office building of the Van Leer's barrel factory by the parks department of the former municipality of Nieuwer-Amstel, of which Chris P. Broerse (1902-1995) was the director. Broerse, together with J. Landwehr, was the founder of a new garden style: the heempark or native-plant garden, which after the Second World War first took root in the Netherlands and later gave a new direction to garden art internationally. A heempark is characterised by the use of native plants, grouped together on the basis of plant geography and plant sociology. Water plays an important role, as does the layout of the paths in such a way that the walker constantly sees new spaces and moves from one biotope to another.
The park is bounded by the heempark "De Braak" and the pond "De Doorbraak" on the north side, the Amsterdamseweg on the west side, the buildings on Nieuwe Karselaan on the south side and the former railway line on the east side. The office building is located in the middle of the park. To the east of the main building, a large part of the park has been given over to parking spaces. The heempark De Braak (1939) is the first park that was laid out entirely according to Broerse's principles. In 1941 a second heempark by Broerse came into being: the Jac. P. Thijssepark and in 1950 the small Mauritsplantsoen. The layout of the park at the Van Leer office in 1957 can therefore be seen as the heempark par excellence in which all experiences gained in the 20 years since De Braak have come together and been utilised. The original layout consisted of different biotopes which were created among other things by excavations, reversal of the profile of the peat soil and raising of levels. Because of the large scale of the park it was possible to alternate large open areas with wooded planting. Some plant species were deliberately planted in the biotope suited to them, others were sown according to the experiences gained earlier. Some of the plants that grew in the park in the years after the layout were: heather and dwarf shrubs, creeping willow, gentian, sundew, meadow avens and wild thyme alternated with taller planting such as royal ferns and trees such as alder and rowan. Due to changes in management the original diversity has declined. The planting around the outer perimeter, the water features and the path structure are still clearly present. Moreover, due to the construction of an office building in the north-eastern part of the park, other parts were raised with excavated soil, as a result of which a large part of the special environments have disappeared. Due to the construction in the north-eastern part, the character of the park there has been so altered and impoverished that this part no longer represents monumental values.
Visually speaking, De Braak and the Van Leer park flow into each other and physically there was originally contact between the two parks by means of two bridges: a small drawbridge on the north-west side and a large drawbridge on the north-east side. A third, concrete, bridge crosses the water on the east side. These three bridges are located in a part of the park that falls outside the protection. A fourth bridge, in the eastern part of the park, is now no longer present. Other components of the park layout are the access road with concrete bridge and a nameplate.
Description
PARK LAYOUT. The park is accessible via the main entrance on the Amsterdamseweg. In front of the office building are large grassed areas with a wide, winding water feature which is crossed by means of a concrete bridge. This bridge consists of a straight concrete slab with a simple, low railing consisting of a metal tube. The immediate surroundings of the office building are characterised by lawns with cultivated planting in the form of evergreen and deciduous shrubs, individually placed deciduous trees and large groups of ferns. Because the planting at the front of the office building is generally low, the building is reflected in the water feature that runs in front of it. The north side of the park is characterised by denser undergrowth of herbaceous plants, wetland plants, shrubs and wooded planting consisting mainly of deciduous trees. The existing planting is broadly the same as it was at the time of the layout. Due to the large scale on which this park was laid out, it was possible to alternate densely planted wooded areas with open areas with mainly herbaceous planting. This design element is still strongly present.
The path structure (still original) consists of winding paths along the lawns and smaller winding paths in the wooded area. The paths were originally laid at a raised level due to the marshy soil. The two paths that previously ran from the canteen in a southerly direction have been relocated for the purpose of laying out a new terrace and parking spaces. From two seating areas on the north side of the park there is a view over the water towards the adjacent heempark De Braak. On the south side of the access road, at the level of the porter's lodge and parallel to the Amsterdamseweg, a natural stone nameplate has been placed which consists of travertine blocks laid cold against each other with the text "Van Leer" engraved in it. A new nameplate has been affixed over the plate for the companies currently located there.
Valuation
The PARK LAYOUT is of general importance:
- because of the ensemble value as a complex component of the design, whereby the park layout with the objects situated in it was deliberately included in the design process and should be regarded as an inseparable whole with the building itself;
- because of the socio-cultural historical values whereby the park layout was designed around the office building and thus is an expression of the socio-economic developments around the working environment;
- because of the exceptional garden historical value of the layout according to the principle of a heempark, which originated in the Netherlands in the post-war period and later received international following;
- because of the role of this park in the oeuvre of C. Broerse who, in collaboration with J. Landwehr, was the founder of the heempark style;
- because of the garden historical value of this park which is a culmination of all experiences gained in earlier heemparks by C. Broerse and because of the direct relationship to the adjacent heempark De Braak and De Doorbraak, also by his hand;
- because of the coherence with the other complex components.
